There are a few things that you can do to ensure that your power meter is reading accurately on every ride. We explore some common questions below regarding power meter accuracy.
About 4iiii Power Meters
Our 4iiii power meters offer raw, un-smoothed data, giving you the flexibility to smooth it on your head unit. Located on the crank arm, our patented 3D Strain Gauge technology measures power by accounting for the lateral bend, pull, and twist of the crank, ensuring highly accurate, measurable, and repeatable data that reflects every nuance of your pedal stroke. Our meters are precisely manufactured and tested to a tight +/- 1% accuracy tolerance.
Routine power meter checks to ensure your power meter is reading accurately:
- Update Firmware: Always ensure your power meter has the latest firmware version. You can install updates easily through the 4iiii App.
- Zero-Offset/Calibrate Regularly: Perform a zero-offset or calibration before every ride. Make sure your bike has acclimated to the riding conditions, and the cranks are in a vertical position.
- Check Battery Levels: A dying battery can impact performance. Replace your battery when it drops below 20% to avoid inaccurate readings.
- Factory Reset: If you're experiencing persistent issues, a factory reset via the 4iiii App can restore the original factory calibration settings.
- Proper Crank Installation: Confirm your crank and crank arm are installed and torqued exactly to the manufacturer's specifications. Incorrect installation is a common cause of inaccurate power measurements.
Additional issues that can cause power data inaccuracies or intermittencies:
- Left/Right Imbalance: If you are riding with a single sided power meter, and have a known left/right imbalance, you can account for this using the Scale Factor setting in the 4iiii App.
- Battery Contact: To make sure there is good contact have a look at the metal tabs inside your battery compartment. If necessary, gently bend them up to ensure good battery contact.
- Water Ingress: Check to see if the inside of the battery compartment is wet, if so let the power meter air dry with the cap off and battery out for a day or two and then try again.
- Signal Interference: Turn off any unnecessary Bluetooth or ANT+ devices in the vicinity. This is especially important in indoor training environments.
- Cycling Computer: Make sure your cycling computer firmware is up-to-date.
