STAC ZERO: Troubleshoot Halcyon behaviour

My Halcyon never seems to "Get Going" into Sim/Erg modes

Possible Symptoms (some or all of these may apply)

• The Halcyon doesn't respond to changes in Erg Mode (target wattages) or Sim Mode (uphills/downhills), even though your wheel is spinning.
• You're spinning the wheel by hand.
• You're doing the STAC Control Panel tutorial for the first time and can't feel any of the example uphills/downhills or erg mode settings.
• You're on the bike riding, but in a relatively slow gear.
• Halcyon is just "acting weird" (you may also want to check that your speed sensor is configured properly).

Solution:
In order for the Halcyon to fully switch into erg or sim modes, you need to get your wheel spinning faster than 21.6km/h or 13.4mph. Usually it isn't possible to do this by hand, so we recommend getting on the bike and doing a couple strong pedals in a fast (big front ring, small rear ring) gear.

Once you've gone fast enough to switch the Halcyon into riding mode, it will remain in that mode and should respond to Sim and Erg commands unless your speed drops lower than 5km/h (3mph).

Note that STAC recommends always using your fast gears when using Erg mode, and using an appropriate comfortable gear when riding in Sim mode.

My Halcyon Never Seems to Close Its Magnets When I Start Riding

If you get on your STAC Zero Halcyon Smart Trainer and the magnets either remain wide open or periodically attempt to come close to your wheel before backing back off, then this means the Halcyon is waiting for your wheel to stop before attempting to perform a calibration.  The Halcyon is designed to not perform this calibration while the wheel is moving, since the friction generated by actually touching the wheel creates an unpleasant noise.

The Halcyon uses two signals to determine if your wheel is moving: the speed sensor and the force sensor.  If either indicate that the wheel is moving as the magnets approach, then it will back the magnets off to a safe distance until the wheel is sensed to have come to a stop.

Solution: Bring your wheel to a complete stop and wait for each magnet array to touch your wheel.  Once the Halcyon has completed its calibration, you should be able to ride normally.  A suggested ride startup is to spin your wheel, hit the brakes, wait for the calibration, then get riding.

 

 

The Halcyon Smart Trainer attempts to calibrate on my wheel even when my wheel is spinning

The Halcyon performs its wheel-calibration step where it squeezes your wheel in three situations:
1) On startup, once your wheel has come to a stop
2) 5-10 seconds after your wheel stopped spinning
3) If commanded to from STAC Control Panel

The wheel-calibration step is important for proper trainer operation.

If the Halcyon is seeming to do the wheel-calibration step when it shouldn't, the primary cause is if your speed sensor is not reliably picking up your magnet.  See the speed-sensor troubleshooting article.

On the STAC Zero Halcyon, you can tell if your spoke magnet is being picked up by a quick red flash every time the magnet goes by.  If you don't get a red flash every single time the magnet goes by, then you may want to try re-positioning or changing the polarity of your spoke magnet.  See the speed-sensor troubleshooting guide for more details.  The below video shows the expected behaviour of the red light as a spoke magnet passes by the speed sensor.
