How often should I update my firmware?
There is no need to update firmware regularly as there will be no further firmware updates for STAC Zero models.
How do I update my firmware?
- Activate the trainer.
- Connect to the trainer in STAC Control Panel.
- Select "Settings and Firmware."
- Check the version number of the available firmware. If the available firmware and current firmware versions are the same, do not proceed with the update.
- Select update.
- Leave STAC Control Panel open and hold your phone close to the trainer until the update reaches 100%.
Note that it is normal for the trainer to appear disconnected and even unresponsive to the spoke magnet while it updates the firmware. You do not need to continue to spin the wheel to keep it on.
My firmware update appeared successful, but now my trainer isn't responding to commands from an app.
Reboot your phone. Some phones will cache information from the previous firmware version, preventing the current one from connecting properly until you reboot them.
I attempted a firmware update, but the app says it failed.
- If you already have the most up-to-date version, a firmware update will automatically fail. Your trainer should return to normal. No further action is required.
- If a firmware update fails and returns to the previous version, close STAC Control Panel to disconnect from the trainer, and re-attempt the update in 20 minutes if desired.
- If the update fails multiple times,
- Try using a different phone
- Troubleshoot your Bluetooth connection
- Halcyon and older iOS devices: If you are using an iPhone with an iOS earlier than version 12, you will need to update your phone before installing firmware versions 2000 and onward. After you update your OS, remove the existing app from your phone and re-download the current version from Play Store, then reboot your phone.
- Powermeter 2016: If you own a kick-stater unit with firmware version 1, you will not be able to update the firmware.
I attempted a firmware update, and now I can't connect to my trainer!
Symptoms of a trainer stuck in firmware update mode
A firmware upgrade has been recently attempted and:
- When you try to connect in STAC Control Panel, you see something called "DfuTarg" or "stacupdate"
OR
- The trainer suddenly appears unresponsive or under-sensitive to the spoke magnet (for example, it may stop responding to a spoke magnet mounted on a spoke, but will flash briefly if the magnet is passed quickly and closely by the sensor by hand).
- When activated the lights flash briefly, and then go out, and cease to respond to the spoke magnet.
- The trainer isn't visible in other app's connection menus, or if you are able to connect to it, it doesn't send any watt readings or respond to any commands.
AND
- The trainer is not out of batteries.
- STAC Control Panel reported the battery level was high last time you were able to connect.
- Halcyon only: The orange light by the charging port turns on when you connect to a USB port, then turns off shortly afterwards, indicating it is full.
- Or the trainer has been on the charger consistently.
Solutions for a trainer stuck in firmware update mode
A.
- Close STAC Control Panel, put your phone briefly into airplane mode to ensure you're completely disconnected, and walk away for 20 or 30 minutes. This is often enough to reboot the trainer, so it returns to normal next time you connect with it.
B.
- If the trainer is still stuck in firmware update mode, open STAC Control Panel, and pass the spoke magnet close by the sensor until you see the trainer show up in the connection page. It may appear under a different name, such as "DfuTarg" or "stacupdate".
- If you a message pops up saying "A trainer has been detected in firmware update mode. Do you want to continue?" press ok. Otherwise select "DfuTarg" or "stacupdate".
- Select Continue Update.
- Select the correct type of trainer (Halcyon Smart Trainer or Powermeter) carefully. If you accidentally select the wrong type of trainer it will be stuck permanently.
- Leave STAC Control Panel open and hold your phone close to the trainer until the update reaches 100%.
C.
If completing the update is unsuccessful,
- Try using a different phone
- Troubleshoot your Bluetooth
- See "Reboot the Halcyon following DfuTarg" (instructions for iOS) (instructions for Android)
